For more than forty years I have asked myself a simple question: why do some people learn languages quickly and naturally, while others struggle despite years of study? This question has shaped almost every major decision of my life. It guided my studies in psychology and linguistics. It took me across Asia, where I witnessed firsthand how different cultures approached learning. It led me to develop Kungfu English, the first large-scale brain-based language learning system. And ultimately, it has guided the creation of Speech Genie, a new kind of learning experience powered by cognitive artificial intelligence.
I have always believed that language is not something you learn; it is something you acquire. Every human brain is built for language. No one struggles to learn their first language. No infant is embarrassed to speak. No child studies grammar charts or vocabulary lists. They absorb. They imitate. They experiment. They play. They connect language to meaning, emotion, movement, and experience. The tragedy of modern schooling is that almost every traditional method works against the brain’s natural design. We are taught to memorise instead of understand, to translate instead of perceive, to recite instead of communicate. And then we blame ourselves when it does not work. If you have ever frozen in conversation, it is not because you lack ability. If you have ever studied for years without fluency, it is not because you lack discipline. It is because the methods given to you did not align with how the brain actually acquires language.
When I first arrived in Asia as a young man, I decided to do things differently. At school and university I had tried things the traditional way. I opened textbooks. I memorised vocabulary. I forced myself to recall grammar rules in real time. And it all fell apart the moment I needed to use the language in a real conversation. The turning point came the day I got to interact with someone with another language, where we just had to communicate.
And, a voice in my head said “Stop learning and start listening.” That small shift pushed me into the world of accelerated learning, cognitive science, brain physiology, emotional regulation, and pattern recognition. Over time, I discovered principles that consistently led to rapid acquisition: exposure to comprehensible input, relaxed states of attention, multi-sensory associations, physical engagement, meaningful context, and correction-free learning environments (where a learner does not have their nose pushed into every mistake they make, like an errant dog with a bladder problem).
When these elements were present, people learned astonishingly fast. When they were absent, people struggled.
Years later, these principles became the foundation of Kungfu English, a mobile learning system that has already helped more than ten thousand learners across Asia achieve real-world English communication. Many of them succeeded with as little as ten minutes per day. They gained confidence. They started speaking spontaneously. They overcame fear and hesitation. And for the first time, many realised that they could actually do this. The neuroscience was working. But I always knew there was more possible.
Human-guided learning is powerful, but humans cannot be present with a learner every moment of the day. They cannot give instant feedback constantly. They cannot adapt infinitely. They cannot respond to every nuance of pronunciation or hesitation. They cannot meet you exactly at your level all the time. Artificial intelligence, however, can.
To realise this next step, I partnered with John Ball, a cognitive scientist and architect of a new type of AI based on Patom Theory — a model of language understanding grounded in how the human brain processes patterns and meaning. Unlike large language models that generate statistical predictions, Cognitive AI understands language the way a human does: through meaning. This allowed us to create something entirely new. With Speech Genie, the AI is not a chatbot. It is not a teacher. It is your language parent. It observes. It responds. It adjusts. It guides. It helps you speak naturally without fear. It corrects without judgment. It reacts to your level in real time. It creates an environment for acquisition, not memorisation.
One of the biggest barriers in language learning is embarrassment. When the brain feels judged, learning shuts down. In a state of fear, your working memory collapses, your auditory processing weakens, and your cognitive flexibility diminishes. This is why many learners can understand grammar in theory but cannot speak a full sentence under pressure. The Speech Genie environment eliminates this emotional barrier. When you interact with your AI avatar, you can experiment freely. You can make mistakes without consequence. You can practice until your speech becomes automatic. You speak aloud, receive instant feedback, and gradually refine your pronunciation and fluency. It feels natural because it matches how children grow into their first language: lots of low-pressure practice, guided by a supportive presence that does not judge.
People are often surprised to learn that they do not need thousands of words to begin speaking a new language confidently. In my research, I found that just 66 words account for 50 percent of daily interactions. Two thousand words cover 80 percent of daily communication. Three thousand words bring you to roughly 98 percent functional fluency for everyday life. This is liberating, because it means the path to conversation is not about volume. It is about precision. It is about learning the right words, in the right order, with the right brain-aligned methods. Speech Genie prioritises these high-value words and structures from the very beginning. You do not feel overwhelmed. You do not drown in lists. You experience early wins, which boosts motivation and accelerates progress.
Another key element of natural learning is that the brain links language to sensory experience. When you look at a picture, hear a sound, imitate a gesture, or feel an emotion, your brain creates stronger memory networks. This is why Speech Genie uses pictures, sounds, mouth-shape animations with real faces, gestures, and realistic scenarios. It is multi-sensory learning. You learn by seeing, hearing, doing, and feeling. Memory becomes automatic because the learning mirrors real-world communication. When you see your AI avatar gesture, your brain encodes the meaning. When you mimic the mouth shapes in FaceFonics® exercises, your pronunciation becomes more natural. When you follow immersive scenarios, your comprehension grows without translation. This is exactly how children map words to meaning — through rich, multi-sensory experience.
Most adults believe they are too busy to learn a language. But learning does not require long study sessions. The brain prefers short, frequent interactions. Ten minutes of relaxed learning is far more effective than two hours of forced study. This is why Speech Genie is built for micro-learning moments throughout your day. While waiting in line, riding the train, or taking a break, you can spend a few minutes interacting with your Genie. These small sessions compound over time, end up creating significant progress with minimal effort. You do not need willpower. You need consistency, and the design of Speech Genie makes consistency almost effortless.
Many people blame themselves for past failures in language learning. They tell me they “don’t have the talent.” They say they are “not good at languages.” They assume their memory is poor or that they are too old. But after decades of watching thousands of learners succeed, I can confidently say this: if you struggled before, it was not your fault. You were simply using methods that went against your brain’s natural wiring. Traditional systems rely heavily on memory, repetition, grammar explanation, and error correction. The brain does not acquire language this way. It acquires language through meaning, pattern recognition, emotional safety, and contextual immersion. Speech Genie is built around these principles, so the path becomes smoother, easier, and far more enjoyable.
When you start learning naturally, something magical happens. You find yourself understanding without translation. Words appear in your mind without forcing them. Sentences form themselves as patterns become familiar. You begin to think in the language rather than converting from your mother tongue. Confidence replaces hesitation. Fluidity replaces fear. Learning becomes a pleasure instead of a burden. The more you engage with the Genie, the more your brain adapts and reorganises itself around the new language. This is neuroplasticity in action, and it is one of the most beautiful experiences a learner can have.
The technology behind Speech Genie is genuinely groundbreaking. It combines decades of applied brain science, cognitive psychology, and accelerated learning research with an AI architecture built for meaning rather than prediction. It works across multiple devices — smartphones, tablets, desktops, and even large screens — making it accessible to learners everywhere. We are launching initially with English and Chinese, with Japanese and additional languages to follow. The system adapts to your level and evolves with your progress, ensuring you always feel challenged but never overwhelmed.
I have spent much of my career watching people transform their lives through language. I have seen hotel workers in their fifties achieve fluent English. I have seen shy teenagers find their voice. I have seen business professionals reach new markets and opportunities. I have seen people reconnect with family members because they finally shared a language. These stories are the reason I continue this work. Language opens doors. It expands horizons. It builds confidence. It enables connection. And now, with tools like Speech Genie, the journey is more accessible than ever.
We are launching Speech Genie through a Kickstarter campaign because we want to build this movement together with our early community. Kickstarter allows us to involve learners directly, offer early access, gather feedback, and share behind-the-scenes development.
